March 3rd , 2010 - How To Build Your Business Blog
Marsha Maung

I recently took on a new job updating and blogging on behalf of a company dealing with IT. Generally speaking, they understand what online social networking and internet marketing is. I say 'generally' because at the end of the day, one needs to understand that it takes some time for business blogging to work and number two, you don't build a business blog to sing your own song, sound your own trumpet, sell your own toys.
OK, fine. You DO blog to sell your own toys but there is a big difference between outwardly selling and effectively selling. Many blogging and online marketing experts will agree on this one. There is a unique, particularly effective way for a blog for business to work. And here are some of them (not all of them – because I would need to write a book to do that).
You are creating a public personae and if the personae says nothing but 'buy me', 'buy me', 'I am number one' and 'buy me (again)', it is only a matter of time that people get turned off and stopped listening to you. In online social networking terms, that would be 'unfollow' or 'unfriend' you.
The personae need to blog about things within the industry that makes it/he/she sound like it/he/she is an authority in the field. For instance, one could be selling cell phones and talk about everything related to Telco, communication, internet, jokes, the latest online fad, etc. It doesn't always have to be ABOUT YOU. We draw the line when looping into an area completely out of our genre...like 'celebrity gossip'.
In order to gain the trust that you so need from your readers, you need to be partial, fair and informative. It's a bonus if you are funny.
Be real, be a person, be honest. If you would risk trusting me on this, you will find that once you change the way you blog and promote your business blog amongst your community, you will generate more interest if you were honest and interesting. That is the style that you are going to use whenever you add content to that site. The old school way of writing up a document that mostly blows one's own trumpet is gone. Doesn't work anymore.
You will be surprised at how people respond and form an attachment to your business blog if you expressed surprise, hurt, negative feelings, happiness, exceedingly overwhelming joy....etc when you write!
At the end of the day, remember this: you are dealing with human, not humanoids. Humans latch on to personality and style, information and education, entertainment and laughter. Try to add some of that into your business blog.
Have fun!
